EPA Recognizes Mountain View Grand Among Nation?s Leading Green Power Purchasers

Mountain View Grand is the sole hotel or resort and one of only seven companies in New Hampshire to have secured a place on this list of those that buy green power to meet all their electricity use.

A major component of Mountain View Grand’s commitment to use wind energy came on line this past fall with the installation of a 121-foot wind turbine from Northern Power Systems. The wind turbine, which was 100 percent privately funded, offsets a substantial portion of the resort’s current electricity consumption.

In order to meet the criteria for the 100% Green Power Partnership program, Mountain View Grand is buying 100% NewMix Wind power Green-e Energy Certified Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from Constellation NewEnergy, Inc.

Mountain View Grand’s one-hundred percent use of wind power avoids an estimated 2,137,848 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions, which is equivalent to the greenhouse gas emissions from 185 passenger vehicles each year, or the CO2 emissions from the electricity use of 126 average American homes for one year.

“The wind turbine and green power initiative are just two of many steps we have taken to tangibly lower our carbon footprint at Mountain View Grand,” explains Chris Diego, managing director. “We’re committed to becoming a model for environmental responsibility, as we offer a luxury guest experience that encourages an active appreciation for our natural environment.”

According to Diego, Mountain View Grand has undertaken many recent environmental sustainability projects, including a recycling program; using energy-saving lighting; recycling cooking oil to make diesel fuel; using its water tower to irrigate its golf course and grounds; growing its own vegetables and flowers; implementing a towel and linen reuse program; raising Leicester Longwool sheep, a critically endangered breed; buying local food and beverage products and forging a partnership with the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests to promote land conservation.

Mountain View Grand is New Hampshire’s only resort or hotel to earn AAA Four Diamond Awards in both Lodging and Dining and is a member of Historic Hotels of America.
