The supply agreement was signed today in Washington by David Flitterman, Gamesa North American Chairman, and Martín Múgica, President and CEO of Iberdrola Renewables in the United States, in the presence of Iñigo Urkullu, head of the Basque Country government.
Today, Gamesa, a global technology leader in wind energy, signed an agreement with Iberdrola under which it will supply 202 MW in the US.
Specifically, Gamesa will supply 101 G97-2.0 MW turbines for the Baffin wind farm project being developed by Iberdrola in southern Texas. The wind turbines are scheduled for delivery mid-2014, while the facility is slated for commissioning towards the end of next year. This agreement marks the largest single order for this WTG, the G97-2.0 MW.

The Baffin wind project is still under development, and the decision to proceed is contingent upon local government approval. Iberdrola is well positioned to utilize the 202 MW of turbines at other possible US sites.
The wind farm project is the last phase of Iberdrola’s Peñascal complex which, once commissioned, will have capacity of 606 MW, generating enough power to supply 210,000 households and prevent the emission of 850,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases every year.
Gamesa is one of Iberdrola’s established suppliers in the US, having installed over 1,880 MW for the Spanish utility in 17 different American wind farms. In all, Gamesa has installed over 9,000 MW of wind power capacity for Iberdrola worldwide.
Gamesa G97-2.0 MW
The Gamesa G97-2.0 MW wind turbine is a standard-bearer in the sector thanks to its low power density. This new product contributes to one of the company’s top priorities: significantly cutting the cost of energy (CoE) of Gamesa’s low and medium wind speed products.
Gamesa has sold over 2,168 MW of this model globally. The characteristics of this turbine make it ideal for high-growth markets such as India, Chinese provinces close to major load centres (Beijing and Shanghai) and Brazil, as well as Europe and the US.
This turbine is part of Gamesa’s 2.0-2.5 MW platform, the most versatile on the market: five different rotors (G80-2.0 MW, G87-2.0 MW, G90-2.0 MW, G97-2.0 MW, G114-2.0 MW y G114-2.5 MW), tower heights ranging from 60m to 125m and environmental alternatives designed to enable installation at even the most complex sites. Thanks to this performance, close to 15,500 MW of this platform’s WTGs have been installed worldwide, while average fleet availability is running at over 98%.
