Wind energy in Canada: Largest wind farm opens in Lakeshore

Essex County is now home to Canada’s largest wind farm, a wind power project which has 94 wind turbines capable of generating216 megawatts of power which is enough electricity to provide for the needs of 70,000 homes annually.

The new 72-turbine, 166-megawatt Comber wind farm was officially opened by officials of Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners Tuesday and joins the company’s earlier project, a 22-turbine wind farm near Kingsville.

Owned and operated by Brookfield , the new wind farm will also generate $40 million in lease payments for local landowners over the next 20 years as well as $400,000 in new tax revenues for the Town of Lakeshore.
