Chu Visits the 2012 North American International Auto Show

Secretary Chu toured the floor of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, where he had the chance to visit with numerous automakers and their suppliers. His tour included a look at the latest electric vehicles, such as the brand new electric car Ford Focus, along with new highly efficient models of the Ford Fusion, Chevy Spark, and Dodge Dart.

After checking out the newest slate of efficient and electric cars, he traveled to the Ford Technology Center to meet with researchers and tour the lab. The visit gave the Secretary a glimpse at what’s on the horizon for American automobiles as well as the opportunity to observe how technological innovations like the ones developed by the Energy Department and their partners are being incorporated into the next generation of vehicles.

The creative and innovative vehicle designs on display exemplified the stunning turnaround the U.S. auto industry has mounted in the past year, with General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler all posting profits for the first time in seven years and increasing their market share for the first time since 1988.
