Neptune Wind to develop a 500 MW offshore wind farm 20 miles off of the Massachusetts and Rhode Island

The project, called Nomans Wind, is being planned as a 500 MW generation facility and will employ next generation offshore turbines designed for the strong wind regime in this area.

Neptune Wind intends to develop a 500 MW wind energy capacity offshore wind farm 20 miles off of the Massachusetts and Rhode Island border. A federal permit could come by 2013 and construction would take five additional years.

The U.S. Department of the Interior made a Call for Information and Nominations for wind power development in the area. Neptune Wind said it will submit a nomination for Nomans Wind’s proposed lease area by the October 3 deadline. Neptune Wind submitted a nomination for a project in federal waters off the coast of New Jersey earlier in 2011.

The latest wind power project would use 80 to 100 wind turbines. The company plans to use a new portside facility in New Bedford, for some manufacturing and construction operations, but is also exploring port and other facilities in Rhode Island.

Neptune Wind is a developer of utility scale offshore wind energy projects. Chuck Digate and Tom Gebhard have partnered to build this business. Fred Sellars and Lynn Gresock at Arcadis and a team at Foley Hoag are helping us to achieve our goals.
