Tata and BP executes 30 MW solar energy plant

These solar energy plants are of different sizes between 5 and greater than 15 megawatts and are located in the northern and western belt of Gujarat.

Tata BP Solar India Ltd, a joint venture of Tata Power and BP Solar, has bagged a series of three large solar power projects totalling more than 30 megawatts which it is executing in Gujarat under the first phase of the state solar power policy of the Gujarat government.

These plants are of different sizes between 5 and greater than 15 megawatts and are located in the northern and western belt of Gujarat, which is one of the sunniest areas in the country.

Commenting on this achievement, Mr K Subramanya, CEO, Tata BP Solar, said, “We are delighted to have won these projects over the last few weeks from prestigious customers against stiff competition from India and abroad. We will be putting in state-of-the-art project execution capabilities to achieve the project completion in time with the required quality.”

The projects are located in the Patan, Kutch and Mithapur areas of the state. Each solar power project will comprise of an array of solar photovoltaic modules of 230 Watts and above, laid out in a modular combination to generate power from solar radiation. This power will be fed into 66 KV lines of the Gujarat state electricity utility.

Each project will generate local employment and entrepreneurship since Tata BP Solar, which is a Bangalore based company, will be using mostly local contractors and labour force in the execution of these projects. The projects have to be completed by the end of the current year. The project owners have signed power purchase agreements with the Gujarat government agencies for 25 years under which the solar power will be sold at the rate of Rs. 15 per unit for the first 12 years and at Rs. 5/ unit for the remaining 13 years of the project life.

The solar modules manufactured by Tata BP Solar at its world class plants in Bangalore are guaranteed to perform and generate power for 25 years with minimal degradation in the power output over the life span of the project.
