WinWinD builds 250 MW wind energy plant in India

WinWinD Power Energy (P) Ltd., a part of the Finnish WinWinD Oy Groupwhich is a constituent of the Chennai-based Siva Group, has entered into an MoU with Suryachakra Green Power Pvt. Ltd. – an associate of Hyderabad-based Suryachakra Power Corporation Ltd. (BSE: SURPOW) – to develop a 250-MW wind energy plant in Dharapuram located near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. Once commissioned, it will further enhance Tamil Nadu’s leadership position in harnessing wind energy.

Estimated to cost US$350 million, the project will be developed in three phases and is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2013. WinWinD will supply, commission and operate 1-MW wind turbines besides providing operational and maintenance (O&M) services for ten years from the date of commissioning.

“With the ever-increasing power requirements in both industrial and residential sectors, it’s importantfor us to harness clean and renewable energy sources and Dharapuram Wind Farm is yet another step to achieve that objective,” said Mr. V. Srinivasan, Group CEO, Siva Group and Chairman of the WinWinD Board, while speaking about WinWinD’s association with Suryachakra. “We’ll be leveraging our integrated wind turbine manufacturing facility in Vengal near Chennai to execute this project,” he added.

WinWinD has secured the necessary land for the project and has already provided the requisite project locations to Suryachakra. During the first phase, aimed for completion by second quarter of 2012, WinWinD will be commissioning wind turbines that will harness 75 MW power. This will help in further harnessing during the next wind season and the full capacity of 250 MW will be achieved during the third and final phase leading to project culmination.

“We’re happy to partner WinWinD, which has proven technology and a stellar track record in commissioning wind farms, in executing this state-of-the-art wind park in Tamil Nadu,” said Dr. S. M. Manepalli, Managing Director, Suryachakra Power Corporation Ltd. “Together with WinWinD, we’ll continue to tap renewable energy sources that will eventually help us in reducing our dependency on fast-depleting fossil fuels.”

WinWinD will assist Suryachakra in getting Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) benefits that are available for renewable energy and energy conservation projects. It also intends to invest in the project through its group company besides assisting its partner in raising debt for project funding.
