Commercial Prototype for Solar Thermal Heating and Electricity Generation

Based on an innovative Rankine cycle engine, the Cogen technology produces clean and cost effective heating and electricity from a low temperature solar thermal system. Incorporated into Cogen’s home energy system, the product provides households with 1 kW of electricity and 8.8 kW of heating from free solar energy.

“Achieving this important commercial milestone is the culmination of a large investment and development program,” said Paul van de Loo, CEO of Cogen Microsystems. “We are very pleased with the results of this trial which builds upon our second generation system which was installed at the City of Salisbury in 2009. This new production prototype is substantially smaller, more efficient and cheaper to manufacture than our previous prototype.”

By integrating heating, hot water and electricity, the Cogen home energy system is cost competitive with network provided energy and provides a much lower carbon footprint. The home energy system will undergo extensive in-house testing and packaging before starting external trials with marketing and development partners in mid 2012.

CEO Paul van de Loo will be discussing the latest trial results with potential partners at the invitation only Micro Combined Heat & Power Summit held in Copenhagen in June this year.

Founded in 2000, Cogen Microsystems (Cogen) develops solar thermal heating and electricity generation products that help customers meet their heating, hot water and electricity needs. Based on a patented Rankine Cycle Engine Technology Platform, Cogen has demonstrated its technology with local government partner, the City of Salisbury in South Australia.

The Company has been awarded funding from the Australian Government’s Climate Ready Program and South Australian Government’s Department of Trade & Economic Development, and is now a leader in Rankine Cycle Solar Thermal Heating and Electricity Generation.
