Westar Energy Seeking To Purchase 369 MW of Wind Energy

Westar Energy is asking the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) for permission to buy an additional 369 MW of wind energy. If approved, the utility would be able to recover the estimated $48 million annual cost of the wind farm from its customers – between $13 and $25 extra per year for residential users.

The Topeka, Kan.-based utility announced last year it would enter into 20-year power purchase agreements with two wind farm developers to comply with a state renewable portfolio standard. The 201 MW Post Rock Wind Farm, located in Ellsworth and Lincoln Counties, was developed by Wind Capital Group. The 168 MW Ironwood wind farm project, located Ford and Hodgeman counties, was developed by Duke Energy Generation Services.
