ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability USA Applauds President Obama’s State of the Union Address and His Ambitious Agenda for Securing a Clean Energy Future For The Nation.

ICLEI USA issues the following statement from Mayor Patrick Hays, City of North Little Rock, AR, Corporate President and Chair of Board of Directors.

President Obama made some significant announcements during his State of the Union Address to the nation, chief among them; 80 percent of America’s electricity should come from clean energy by 2035; America should have one million electric vehicles on the road by 2015; and 80% of Americans should have access to high-speed rail within 25 years.

The following statement is from Mayor Patrick Hays, City of North Little Rock, AR, Corporate President and Chair of Board of Directors, ICLEI USA.

“President Obama called on the nation to drastically curb its dependence on energy from fossil fuels and foster clean energy through a number of bold and innovative proposals. We applaud his challenge to produce 80% of America’s electricity from clean energy sources by 2035, as well as having one million electric vehicles on the road by 2015. As the President looks to win the future, we call on him to recognize and support the nation’s vast network of clean energy innovation factories – our local communities.

The actions proposed by the President will clearly put a 21st Century America on the right track to bolstering much needed job creation and clean tech innovation, while helping to build healthier communities and protect the environment.”
