Advanced Electric Vehicles Highlight Sophisticated Mitsubishi

The personal attendance of Osamu Masuko, President of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, Japan; the Canadian debut of Mitsubishi’s Concept PX-MiEV; the announcement of a new EV partnership with Transport Canada; the confirmation of a new compact crossover design; and the opening of a Canadian Parts Distribution Centre were all part of a major news event at the Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada Inc. (MMSCAN) display, at the Canadian International Autoshow.

Mr. Masuko joined today with Mr. Peter Renz, Director National Marketing for MMSCAN, in raising the profile of advanced all-electric (EV) and hybrid-electric vehicles in Canada. Mr. Renz announced that Transport Canada will partner with MMSCAN in an evaluation and trial of Mitsubishi’s i-MiEV all-electric car, while Mr. Masuko presided over the Canadian introduction of Mitsubishi’s high technology Concept PX-MiEV plug-in hybrid.

"The automobile industry, which has been focusing single-mindedly on high performance and comfort, is shifting to an era where environmental technology and compactness are being demanded by the global market. Therefore, in order for Mitsubishi to grow in a changing environment, we must also adapt with the times." said Masuko.

The Concept PX-MiEV which is slated for release to the general public by 2013 is an advanced plug-in hybrid design, in a midsize package suitable for four adults. Capable of exceptional fuel economy, Concept PX-MiEV combines an extended cruising range and excellent on-road performance with the safety and stability of Mitsubishi’s acclaimed Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC).

Concept PX-MiEV is powered by two electric motors, one for the front wheels and one for the back, plus a 1.6 litre high efficiency gasoline engine, which functions as motive power source and a generator. The PX-MiEV features a three-way battery which can be charged with household 110v or 220v current, or by using a Quick Charge station. The Concept PX-MiEV represents the most evolved result of Mitsubishi’s four decades worth of electric vehicle (EV) research and development.

Mr. Masuko also spoke about the challenges facing the automotive sector, both globally and locally, and confirmed that Mitsubishi would continue working with governments and other organizations that support the Electric Vehicle. He pointed out that Mitsubishi has delivered over 1200 i-MiEV all-electric cars and that Japan now has more than 120 Quick Charge stations in operation. He also encouraged the promotion of an EV friendly environment suitable for development, infrastructure and service – all of this with the goal of introducing an electric vehicle to consumers in the North American market by 2011.

Masuko praised MMSCAN for doubling its sales volume in the past five years, and for its continued strong showing in today’s difficult market, while projecting growth from the current 84 Mitsubishi dealers to 100 dealers by 2012. He also announced that Mitsubishi Motors Corporation had approved the creation of a distinct Canadian Parts Distribution Centre. A new, thoroughly modern building will be constructed with the opening planned for January, 2011. The purpose of this Parts Distribution Centre will be to improve service for Canadian owners of Mitsubishi products and to assist MMSCAN in their future growth.

Also much anticipated was the announcement of the arrival this fall of an all new, fuel efficient, compact crossover – a vehicle that promises to be ideal for the Canadian market.

Also shown were the restyled 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander midsize SUV with available Super All-Wheel Control and the sleek new 2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse Coupe.
