Prysmian will Develop the Power Links for the Walney Offshore Wind Farm, in the Irish Sea

Prysmian, a worldwide leading Group in the sector of cables and systems for energy and telecommunications, has been awarded a € 18 million contract by the Danish utility DONG Energy to supply a complete 132 kV export cable system for the second phase of the Walney Offshore Wind Farm project, in the Irish Sea. This project is expected to be completed by summer 2011.

The second phase of the Walney wind power project consists of the expansion of the existing wind farm structure through the construction of 51 new wind turbines, which will generate an extra 183 MW power.

In particular, Prysmian is involved in the design and supply of a submarine and land cable system, which will connect the offshore wind farm to the mainland power grid. The submarine cables will be manufactured at the Prysmian submarine cables factory based in Arco Felice, Italy, and the land cables at the factory based in Wrexham, Great Britain.

This new contract follows the € 24.5 million for the supply of export cables for the first phase of the same wind energy project.

It further confirms the validity of Prysmian’s know-how and technology for the fast growing renewable energy market, and the Group commitment to support offshore and on-land wind farm operators throughout the world.

Prysmian has developed a wide range of products and technologies for the wind energy sector, both for the connection of the power generation parks to the transmission and distribution networks, and for the operation of the wind turbines. The Group is currently involved in other important projects in order to develop some of the world’s largest offshore wind farms, such as Ormonde, Gunfleet Sands, Greater Gabbard and Thanet in the UK, and Alpha Ventus in Germany.

A leading player in the industry of high-technology cables and systems for energy and telecommunication, the Prysmian Group is a truly global company with sales exceeding Euro 5 billion in 2008 and a strong position in higher value-added market segments.

With its two businesses, Energy Cables & Systems (submarine and underground cables for power transmission and distribution, for industrial applications and for the distribution of electricity to residential and commercial buildings) and Telecom Cables & Systems (optical cables and fibres and copper cables for video, data and voice transmission), Prysmian boasts a global presence with subsidiaries in 38 countries, 53 plants in 21 countries, 7 Research & Development Centres in Europe, USA and South America, and about 12,000 employees.
