Enel Green Power, Centro Ingrosso Sviluppo Campania (CIS) and Interporto Campano today signed an agreement for the installation, in
Campania, of a 25 MW photovoltaic plant, the largest integrated roof-top project with innovative technology in Italy and one of the largest in the world.
The plant, which will be owned by Enel Green Power and is to be built in the town of Nola, in the Province of Naples, will be installed on the roofs of commercial and logistics properties, with full integration with the existing architecture. Equipped with innovative flexible amorphous silicon thin-film photovoltaic modules, it will begin to operate in 2010.
Once fully operational, the plant will be capable of producing approximately 33 million kilowatt-hours of power each year, enough to meet the consumption needs of 13,000 households – more than a third of the inhabitants of Nola – thereby avoiding the atmospheric emission of more than 21 thousand tonnes of CO2 per year.

He added "the realization of this project, which will be replicated in other logistics centres both in Italy and in Europe and the United States, will help significantly increase Enel Green Power’s installed photovoltaic capacity at the national level, confirming our position as a leader in the development of solar power resources in Italy."
“With the signing of this agreement with Enel Green Power", remarked Carlo Calenda, General Manager of Interporto Campano, "we have reached the fundamental objective of a substantially neutral energy balance, since the Enel plant can generate about 90% of all the electricity consumed by CIS and Interporto Campano. We selected Enel Green Power from among the many companies that submitted bids because they shared a strategic vision that goes beyond the individual project. In the years to come, the CIS -Interporto Campano – Vulcano district will continue to pursue initiatives to reduce environmental impact. With Enel Green Power we decided to consider our site a test bed for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.
The importance of this agreement is underscored by the concomitance of the signing with the Copenhagen summit and the fact that it regards an organisation that operates in Campania, where there is a major, urgent need for action in the environmental field.”
The CIS – Interporto Campano – Vulcano Buono district encompasses an area of over 5 million square metres and is home to 1,000 companies with 9,000 employees (as well as 40,000 indirect jobs). These three organisations work together, integrating all stages of the logistics and distribution supply chain: Interporto Campano for logistics, CIS for commercial distribution and Vulcano Buono for services and retail. Located 20 km from Naples, thanks to the presence of infrastructure and services and Interporto’s rail links both with the main ports of Central and Southern Italy (Naples, Salerno, Taranto and Gioia Tauro) and with Northern Italy and Central Europe, it is a strategic logistics node in Southern Italy, representing "Europe’s Southern Gateway".
