RES Announces Acquisition of 500 MW of Wind Power Projects in Turkey

These projects, at different stages of development, are due to be realised over a period of 3 to 4 years and the first generating licence is expected to be granted within the next few months. They represent a potential total investment of nearly 750 M€.

Turkey has a strong renewable energy potential and RES will be concentrating its efforts on wind energy and solar power. Thanks to in-house skills that encompass all aspects of development – site prospecting and assessment, plant design, through the planning, financing and construction of projects, right up to the operation & maintenance of a generating wind power plant, RES has all the necessary expertise to bring these projects to successful commercial operation.

To demonstrate RES’s commitment to the Turkish market and to manage its growing operations RES opened a subsidiary, RES Anatolia in Istanbul, in late 2008. The office currently employs a team of 5 and has an ambitious recruitment plan in the months to come, to match the expected increase in development activity.

Jean-Marc Armitano, CEO of RES Mediterranean2 said: “We have been actively reviewing our expansion in the Mediterranean markets and have identified the Turkish market as one of the major growth areas for our business. Meeting the electricity growth in Turkey combined with the need to reduce carbon emissions, will create a favourable environment to make use of its enormous wind and solar energy resources. This acquisition is a first major milestone in what we hope will be a long and successful enterprise in Turkey”.

William Hopkins, Commercial Director of RES Mediterranean, added: “We are particularly excited to be entering into the Turkish market at this time. We are fully committed to investing the necessary time and effort to take these projects through to successful completion and we are looking forward to the challenge”

The introduction of RES into the Turkish market has been supported by the Investment Support and Promotion Agency of Turkey (Invest in Turkey).

Alpaslan Korkmaz, the President of Investment Support and Promotion Agency of Turkey mentioned: “The Agency has been following various investors for renewable projects in Turkey. We are glad to see the forward step of RES, highlighting the important potential of our country. Thus it is totally in line with the target of liberalisation of the energy market in Turkey, setting a great example for further investors.

In wind power projects, the detailed evaluation process run by EMRA and the visionary approach of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources are enforcing Turkey’s position on energy sector in the world. We are grateful to them.”

RES is one of the world’s leading renewable energy developers working across the globe to develop, construct and operate projects that contribute to our goal of a sustainable future.

In the quarter of a century since RES was formed, we have played a central role in the development of the global renewable energy market and we have helped to move the sustainable energy debate from the margin to the mainstream.

We have a portfolio of low-carbon energy technologies and a range of services which together can meet demand from the industrial, public and commercial sectors on whatever scale.

Large scale renewable energy power plants

RES has been an established presence at the forefront of the wind energy industry for over two decades. Our core activity is the development, design, construction, financing and operation of wind farm projects worldwide. With a portfolio of more than 4GW constructed and several thousand megawatts under construction and in development, RES continues to play a leading role in what is now the world’s fastest growing energy sector.
RES is also an independent power producer. We own and operate a growing portfolio of wind farms around the world, currently totalling over 450MW.

RES offers the installation of solar plants utilising either Photovoltaic power (PV) or Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) in the Mediterranean region. We have the know-how, the resources and the project management capabilities needed to develop, construct and operate solar fields for large scale power generation connected to the grid.

RES has been selected by the Port of Blyth as the ‘preferred developer’ of an environmentally-friendly biomass power plant on the site of the former Bates Colliery in Blyth in Northumberland. The 100MW project will generate green electricity for homes and businesses and the biomass fuel will be delivered to the site primarily through the port.

RES offers a range of building-integrated renewable energy technologies for the industrial, public and commercial sectors. We can offer a range of services and we are unique in our ability to deliver all the main forms of renewable energy technology (solar photovoltaic, solar hot water, biomass, ground source heating and cooling and wind).

RES and its specialist technology partner companies have already delivered thousands of renewable projects. From design and installation to operation and maintenance, we will design a sustainable solution for you.
Design of sustainable buildings

Inbuilt is an independent RES Group company, providing design and consulting excellence associated with the delivery of sustainable built environments. Inbuilt adopts radical new thinking, develop bold new approaches and provide complete integrated solutions to pursue our vital mission: to ensure that sustainability becomes ‘inbuilt’.
Company information

RES is part of the Sir Robert McAlpine group, a British family-owned firm with over 100 years’ experience in construction and engineering. Renewable Energy Systems Holdings Limited is a subsidiary of Sir Robert McAlpine Enterprises Limited, and has three primary direct subsidiaries:

1. Renewable Energy Systems Limited (our main operating company in relation to wind assets);
2. RES Enterprises Limited (a relatively new division which is committed to building integrated renewable energy technologies for the industrial, public and commercial sectors); and
3. Inbuilt Limited (a relatively new division which is committed to providing technical and consulting excellence in sustainable built environments).

These four RES Group companies are the group holding company and the main operating companies respectively of the RES Group, further details of which are set out below.

Renewable Energy Systems Holdings Limited is a limited liability company registered in England and Wales under Company Number 4913497 and its registered office is at Beaufort Court, Egg Farm Lane, Kings Langley, Hertfordshire WD4 8LR.

RES’s expansion has kept pace with the extraordinary growth of the global wind energy industry. Companies within the RES Group have constructed more than 75 wind farms around the world, with a combined capacity of over 4GW. Of these, more than 3,000 MW has been built in North America, over 500MW in the UK and Ireland, approximately 250MW in France and the balance across the rest of Europe. New wind farms are currently in development in the UK, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Scandinavia, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand with further market opportunities being investigated worldwide.

RES is developing a range of renewable energy technologies – wind, solar, biomass, ground source heating and cooling systems – over a number of markets. In the Mediterranean region we are applying our experience in wind to the development, construction and operation of large scale technologies such as PV and Concentrated Solar Power Systems (CPS).

The renewable energy industry is truly international in nature. The RES Group reflects this, with its headquarters in the UK and overseas offices in: France, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, USA and Canada.
