Wind power in Brazil: The number of wind turbines installed by Gamesa reaches the 1,000 mark

Gamesa, a global technology leader in wind energy and the number-two turbine OEM in Brazil according to the MAKE Consultancy ranking has achieved a new milestone, having installed 1,000 wind turbines since it entered this market six years ago.

These turbines, which imply total installed capacity of 2 GW, are sufficient to cover the electricity demands of a city the size of Munich (Germany), while also preventing the emission of around three million tonnes of CO2 each year (equivalent to the amount produced by one million cars in one year).

This record was attained after the Campo dos Ventos and São Benedito wind complexes, operated by CPFL Renováveis, were commissioned.

“Lifting our installed capacity to 2 GW is an important achievement which endorses the Gamesa way of doing things. We are proud to notch up successes like this together with our customers and to contribute in parallel to the growth of wind power in Brazil, a market with a huge potential which has set itself the goal of increasing installed capacity to 18 GW in 2019”, said Edgard Corrochano, Director of Gamesa Brazil.

Gamesa in Brazil

Since Gamesa entered the Brazilian market six years ago, it has built up a position as one of the leading OEMs, with a market share of 17%.

Of the 1,000 wind turbines installed, nearly 10% are accounted for by one of the company’s newest models, the G114-2.1 MW, custom-designed to harness as much power as possible at a lower cost in the constant, low-turbulence wind conditions typical of Brazil.

The company also services close to 2 GW for various customers under O&M agreements. Brazil, where the company has a staff of 500, contributes one-fifth of Gamesa’s turbine sales.

“By comparison with other markets, the major advantage of Brazilian’s energy sector is the visibility into future demand thanks to regulatory stability and pre-defined capacity targets. To guarantee that the sector’s production chain continues to run smoothly, at least 3 GW of wind power needs to be put out to tender each year”, explains Corrochano.
