Oman’s 200MW solar energy project, PV and Concentrated Solar Power, set for launc

A 50 MW wind power project is being developed by the Rural Areas Electricity Company (RAECO) in partnership with Masdar of Abu Dhabi, the Observer reported.

The wind farm project, comprising an array of wind turbines, will be located near Harweel in Dhofar Governorate, and is expected to be operational by early 2017, it added.

The Independent Power Project (IPP) is based on a combination of photovoltaic and concentrated solar power technologies.

Oman is likely to give the green signal for a solar power plants project with an aggregate capacity of up to 200 MW once the government announces its renewable energy policy.

The solar project may be initiated in 2015 or 2016 for 2019 operation, at prospective sites near Adam or Manah, reported the Oman Observer, citing a study titled ‘7-Year Statement’ issued by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP).

The statement provides a seven-year outlook for power and desalinated water supply in the two main systems of Oman — the Main Interconnected System (MIS) and the Dhofar Power System, the report said.

The Independent Power Project (IPP) is based on a combination of photovoltaic and concentrated solar power technologies, according to the report.
