Better ways of integrating concentrated solar power (CSP) to the network

The aim of this collaboration is to investigate solar energy issues and better ways of integrating concentrated solar power to the network.

An important collaboration has begun, between FOSS Research Centre for Sustainable Energy of the University of Cyprus and the company Alfa Mediterranean, in support of research related activities. The aim of this collaboration is to investigate solar energy issues and better ways of integrating concentrated solar power to the network.

Alfa Mediterranean is to install, for the first time in Cyprus, an innovative system that allows production of electricity from concentrated solar power in an attempt to reach the targets set by the European Union regarding the share of renewable sources of energy in the electricity mix by 2020. The system proposed by Alpha Mediterranean (Lloyd system) has the unique feature of combining concentrated solar power with storage. The concentrated solar power system consists of towers, which have solar receivers and heat storage tanks, heliostats and steam generators. The company won the “NER300” competition for innovative renewable energy technology by the European Commission and has received funding of €60.2 million.

FOSS Research Centre for Sustainable Energy was created in order to play a key role in research and technological development activities in the field of sustainable energy within Cyprus and at international level with the aim of contributing to the achievement of the relevant energy and environment objectives set out by Europe. As a leading and innovative research centre, FOSS was considered as the most capable and appropriate centre to support this project. Alfa Mediterranean declared the research centre as a key partner, in order to provide research support, including evaluation and suggestions for the system optimization. The two entities held a meeting on the 19/11/14 at the University Campus to discuss further ways of cooperation and have reached an agreement as to the framework of their collaboration.
