Foreign companies seek power generation in Myanmar through wind power

Two foreign companies from Thailand and China are making feasibility study on generating electricity in Myanmar through the use of wind power, according to the Ministry of Electric Power on Monday.

Under respective memorandums of understanding initiated with the ministry, the Gunkul Engineering Public Co of Thailand is to conduct the feasibility on building wind mills at seven places in Mon, Kayin, Tanintharyi region and Shan state to produce 2,930 megawatts of electricity, while the Three Georges Co of China is also to do so in Chin and Rakhine states, and Ayeyawaddy and Yangon regions to produce 1,102 megawatts of electricity.

The feasibility study for developing commercial wind power could take more than one year, the sources said, adding that the project will be pushed ahead if wind power is found economically feasible.

Significant amount of investment is to be injected for the wind power project to obtain large amount of electricity, experts said.

Meanwhile, Myanmar also signed MoUs with other companies from Thailand in May on feasibility study of producing power using solar energy.

The Green Earth Power Co Ltd of Thailand was to seek establishment of solar power plant in Minbu in Magway Region to produce 50 megawatts of electricity.
