Suzlon subsidiary gets contract for 131 MW Australian wind farm project

The wind power project is based in Victoria, located approximately 30 km south of Ballarat.

REpower Systems, a subsidiary of wind turbine manufacturer Suzlon, has signed a contract with Meridian Energy Limited to supply 64 MM92 wind turbines, each with 2.05 MW of rated power, to the Mt Mercer wind farm in Australia.

This is REpower’s first contract with Meridian Energy and the company’s largest “supply & install” contract for its MM series wind turbines in Australia to date.

The wind turbines are scheduled to be installed and commissioned between September, 2013 and January, 2015.

Mr Chris Judd, CEO – REpower Australia, said: “Being awarded this contract during our ‘10 years in Australia’ celebrations underscores REpower Australia’s longstanding commitment to the Australian wind energy industry and the opportunities presented by the renewable energy target which will deliver around 7 GW of new wind generating capacity in Australia by 2020.”

Mr Andreas Nauen, CEO – REpower Systems SE, stated: “This is a landmark order – we are delighted that our wind turbine technology has been selected by Meridian Energy to construct the Mt Mercer wind farm. This reinforces our position as one of the leading players in the Australian wind energy sector, a key market for us in the years ahead.”

Added Mr Tulsi Tanti, Chairman, Suzlon Group: “This order once again underscores the depth of our capabilities as a group. The combination of our product portfolio; our deep experience in installing and operating projects in very challenging conditions; and our exceptional operating record, with turbine availability consistently exceeding the industry average, makes us the partner of choice in the Australian market, and around the world.”

The Suzlon Group is ranked as the world’s fifth largest wind turbine supplier, in terms of cumulative
installed capacity, at the end of 2011.

The company’s global spread extends across Asia, Australia, Europe, Africa and North and South America approaching 20,000 MW of wind energy capacity installed in 30 countries, operations across 33 countries and a workforce of over 13,000.

The Group offers one of the most comprehensive product portfolios – ranging from sub-megawatt on-shore wind turbines at 600 Kilowatts (KW), to the world’s largest commercially-available offshore turbine at 6.15 MW – with a vertically integrated, low-cost, manufacturing base.

The Group – headquartered at Suzlon One Earth in Pune, India– comprises Suzlon Energy Limited and its subsidiaries, including REpower Systems SE.
