German wind energy capacity rises 793 MW in first half of 2011

Total installed wind power capacity in Germany now stands at 27,981 MW as of June 30, the BWE said. BWE estimates that Germany will add 1,800 MW of new wind farm capacity in 2011, bringing the total number to almost 29,000 MW by the end of the year.

"The numbers indicate that the German home wind turbines market is recovering and will reach again the level of 2009," BWE president Hermann Albers said. The offshore wind power market and repowering promise the biggest growth rates for the future, he added. Germany is Europe’s biggest market for wind energy, followed by Spain with 21.2 GW of installed capacity, although new installations slowed in Spain in the first half of the year.
