Wind energy Vestas launches next generation of offshore wind turbines (7 MW)

Today, at a press conference in London at 12.30 local time Vestas reveals the details of its next generation of offshore wind turbines. Instead of the previously communicated capacity of 6.0 MW, the wind turbine will have a capacity of 7.0 MW and a rotor diameter of 164 metres.

Construction of the first V164-7.0 MW wind power prototypes is expected in Q4 2012. Serial production is set to begin in Q1 2015 provided a firm order backlog is in place to justify the substantial investment needed to develop the new production and assembly facilities required for a wind turbine of this size.
